WHO Confronts Significant Workforce Cuts After US Financial Withdrawal

This international public health organization disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by almost a quarter – totaling over two thousand jobs – by mid-2026.

Funding Crisis Prompts Substantial Reorganization

This decision comes following the United States, formerly the organization's largest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this period.

The US government had been responsible for about eighteen percent of the organization's total budget, causing a substantial budgetary gap.

Projected Staff Cuts

According to internal projections, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.

This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes job cuts, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"The past year has been among the toughest in our history, as we undertook a challenging but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the agency's director-general.

Budget Shortfall Persists

The Switzerland-headquartered organization now faces a budget gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming biennium, amounting to almost a fourth of its total budget.

This figure marks an reduction from a prior projected shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.

Excluded Funding

These budget calculations do not include an additional $1.1bn in expected contributions from current negotiations with various contributors.

The spokesperson for the organization stated that the present unsecured portion of the budget is in fact lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple reasons:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • The launch of a new fundraising campaign
  • An increase in participating countries' required contributions

The restructuring process is now approaching its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
