Shocked Sean "Diddy" Combs Covers Head in Disbelief as Court Remains Unswayed by Pleas for Leniency
The entertainment figure was seen holding his head and seeming dismayed when the court imposed a four-year, two-month sentence in a NY courtroom on the end of the week for charges involving prostitution.
While this sentence was far less than the life imprisonment he potentially faced when his conspiracy case started in spring, the defendant appeared taken aback by the decision. This ruling came just minutes after Combs had appealed with the presiding judge, asserting he took full "responsibility and responsibility" for his actions and declaring he was a transformed man who would, if freed, devote himself to his loved ones and community.
This decision was announced with barely a noise in the court. Family supporters and backers had been counseled by a court official to control any display of their feelings in restraint.
Subsequent to the judgment was delivered, Diddy seemed taken aback to find two court marshals behind him, set to take him back to Metropolitan detention center in the borough, where he has been imprisoned since his arrest over a year prior.
Outside the courtroom, there was a palpable sense of letdown as not one of the prosecution nor his legal team had received the outcome they wanted. A trial that had included detailed accounts of sexual abuse, which the defendant had asserted was consensual, finished in a kind of whimper. The punishment handed down – 50 months – was 10 months less than a review committee had suggested and below 50% of the 11 years prosecutors had asked for.
The defendant is likely to serve only three more years behind bars, with time he has thus far spent removed. However the term was also, evidently, far longer than he and his supporters had hoped for, and maybe even anticipated.
Combs was convicted of two charges of arranging prostitution in July, allegations originating from pressuring companions to participate in elaborate "parties" involving escorts. However on the weightier charges – of running a criminal enterprise that prosecutors claimed were created to satisfy a craving for authority and command – he was adjudged cleared.
"No matter of what anyone states, I believe that I’m truly remorseful," the defendant informed Subramanian. "I became迷失 in overindulgence, I became迷失 in my self-importance. As a result of my actions, I sacrificed my freedom. I implore your judge for leniency."
Combs's lawyer had spent a large part of the proceedings arguing that his defendant was a dedicated father who had lost grasp of his personal journey after a medical procedure in two decades ago that made him addicted to medication as his situation descended unmanageable. The defendant's offspring addressed the court on his behalf.
But the court was unswayed by the arguments that Diddy should be released, practically, on prior detention. The defense exhausted all options in that attempt, offering arguments grounded in social fairness, youth adversity, and his former standing as a corporate and community advocate.
The judge looked unconvinced by Diddy's declaration that he was a transformed man, highlighting that he had participated in an harmful "incident" with "the testifier", a testifier in the case, even after he published an Instagram message following the appearance of video revealing him beating another past companion, the artist.
The court pointed to evidence given by the witness, an online personality, in which Combs had commanded her to "ingest this damn tablet, get out there, engage sexually [referring to an prostitute]. You’re not going to spoil my time."
"You abused them, physically, psychologically and psychologically," Subramanian informed Combs. "Why did it happen for so long? Because you had the power and assets to sustain it, and as you avoided detection."
Subramanian lavished commendation on Ventura and the witness for speaking out, labeling them "courageous persons".
"Not one thing about this proceeding is favorable," the magistrate remarked, "other than the affected individuals who testified."
However nonetheless in its conclusion, the trial of Diddy had an atmosphere of a carnival. During proceedings, family members arrived dressed elaborately, while outside the judicial building in lower Manhattan, backers and public figures each seemed to exclaim more loudly than the following into recording devices, each driven by excitement spurred by proximity to his fame.
Nonetheless Combs's trial will be remembered – as an excess by government lawyers who gambled on transforming a conspiracy proceeding into a mafia-like conspiracy, or as an episode in extended narrative about harsh manipulation involving wealth, sex and control – the defendant himself may have stated it most accurately: he informed the court his conduct had been "appalling, disgraceful and sick".
