RFU Preparing to Ban Men's Athletes Joining R360 Competition from International Duty

The Rugby Football Union is poised to confirm that men's athletes signing deals with the new R360 competition will be banned from representing England, with a formal announcement anticipated as early as next week.

Rebel League Faces Resistance from Traditional Sport Authorities

The Mike Tindall-supported breakaway league has secured funding from private equity companies to launch a condensed tournament in October next year, but the established rugby authorities are preparing to oppose them.

The global players' association has informed its players that it will not endorse the upcoming league.

Our ambition is for all athletes to participate in R360 and still represent their country if chosen, which is why we have designed the series to avoid clashing with international windows.

RFU Seeks Joint Action from Global Unions

The RFU is reportedly advocating a coordinated response from northern and southern hemisphere rugby associations, and has suggested a joint statement stating that all players participating in R360 will not be selected for national team play.

However, a official accord has yet to be reached.

Women's Competition Remains Unclear as the Union Awaits Details

The RFU's stance on the female competition is less clear, as it has obtained conflicting details from R360 over its scheduling.

While the first competition is due to start in October next year, in 2027 a longer R360 has been scheduled to start in April, directly clashing with the premier women's rugby tournament.

England's rugby authority won't allow any of its 32 centrally contracted England women’s players to miss the championship, but with R360 allegedly providing high-paying contracts to several England women's team players, an agreement could be reached if a clash is avoided.

Possible Division in Champion Squad Poses Significant Problem

The potential for division among John Mitchell’s champion team creates a serious problem for English rugby, and the money available may force it to be more flexible.

The first R360 competition next year is due to feature four women’s teams and eight men’s sides, with the opening games planned for October 2, 2026.

Global Players’ Union Declines to Endorse R360

R360 suffered further opposition when the global players' union (the association), which acts for top men’s and women’s players in the northern and southern hemispheres, informed its members that it would not endorse the tournament.

While union officials met with R360 during the British and Irish Lions tour recently, their statement to players characterised the meetings as a information-gathering exercise.

In recent months, multiple reports has been in the media about the proposed R360 league and we are aware that more recently, a preliminary detailed athlete agreement may have been circulated by R360 to athletes and/or player agents.

While IRPA and its members have had some discussions with R360 representatives, these discussions have been focused on fact-finding to understand the substantive detail about the business model, the tournament, its delivery and its interplay with the existing ecosystem.

Comprehensive details about the league remains unavailable and the competition does not at present have World Rugby regulatory approval.

Global Governing Body Sanction Still Awaited

R360 is still awaiting approval by World Rugby, with sources indicating that it had withdrawn a planned application in last month.

Proposals are due to be resubmitted next June, but insiders have indicated that the league will launch next year regardless of whether they receive formal approval.

The inability to balance joining the upcoming international league with an national team role could have a major impact on R360's recruitment plans.

The organization is understood to have signed pre-contract agreements with more than 200 players, eighty percent of whom have played international rugby in the last 24 months.
